Tofranil Uses Tofranil is in a class of drugs called tricyclic anti-depressants. Tofranil is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide. How to Use Tofranil Take Tofranil exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Tofranil can be taken with or without food. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Tofranil Side Effects Difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, face, or tongue, a fast or irregular heartbeat, a heart attack, high blood pressure (blurred vision, severe headache), difficulty urinating, fever with increased sweating, muscle stiffness, or severe muscle weakness. Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, like: drowsiness or dizziness, dry mouth and eyes, constipation, mild tremor, sweating, mild agitation, weakness, ringing in the ears, nausea, loss of weight or appetite. Continue to take Tofranil and talk to your doctor. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Tofranil Precautions Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, kidney/urinary problems, enlarged prostate, glaucoma (narrow angle), severe high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems (hyperthyroid). Limit alcohol intake, as it may aggravate drug side effects. Tofranil should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. The pseudoephedrine in this product is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Caution is advised when this product is used in the elderly since this group may be more sensitive to side effects. Tofranil Drug Interactions Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially: monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate), antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all medicines that you are taking, and do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines without first talking to your doctor. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Tofranil. Tofranil Overdose If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include irregular or unusually slow or fast heartbeat, unusual nervousness or excitement, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures.
Tofranil Notes Do not share Tofranil with others.
Tofranil Missed Dose If you miss an Tofranil dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Tofranil Storage Store Tofranil at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.
